During a debate in Parliament on the drugs bill last week, David Davis, the shadow home secretary, asked his opposite number Charles Clarke if the Government would encourage schools to follow the example of the Abbey School in Kent, which introduced drug testing of pupils earlier this month (YPN, 12-18 January, p4).
Clarke said Davis was "right to identify random drug testing in schools as a necessary weapon for head teachers who wish to use it...we positively encourage it".
Davis said that a Conservative government would support a policy of drug testing in all schools and would supply testing machines to local authorities to reduce the expense.
