Substance misuse: Charity dismisses drug action plans

A government initiative to red-uce the number of deaths resulting from drug use is unlikely to have a significant impact on services for young people, according to a leading drugs charity.

The Government last week announced a £2m scheme aimed at reducing the number of young people dying from drug overdoses or contracting viruses through sharing dirty needles.

But Martin Barnes, chief executive of DrugScope, des-cribed the investment as "modest", and said government cuts in funding to tackle drug misuse among young people outweighed the amount that would "trickle down to young people".

The Harm Reduction Action Plan will include training and guidance for services users and carers, as well as regional roadshows.
