Student Volunteering: Involving Further Education Students in the Community, published by support and advice body Student Volunteering UK, shows that more needs to be done to engage students in the community, suggesting flexible models such as work experience.
It says that integrating volunteering into the further education curriculum assists with citizenship, key skills development, personal development, employability and the recruitment and retention of students.
John Ramsey, chief executive of Student Volunteering UK, said: "The research highlights the difference between further and higher education students, and their wants and needs as volunteers. It also paves the way for setting up sustainable models of volunteering in further education colleges."
