Standards tsars to take schools lead under future Labour government

5 mins read Education
Plans put forward by Labour MP David Blunkett for the creation of powerful school standards directors could, if adopted, have profound implications for the role of children's services in shaping education.

Directors of school standards could become a key feature of Labour's education policy after shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt backed a report recommending their creation.

Former education secretary David Blunkett put forward the idea as part of a review of the party's education policy ahead of next year's general election.

The aim of the new directors, should they ever be introduced, would be to oversee improvements in school standards.

Working across local authority boundaries, they would have powers to intervene in all underperforming state, academy and free schools, sharing best practice and driving improvements in standards (see box).

The directors would be appointed by local authorities from a list of candidates approved by the Education Secretary on a fixed term, five-year contract.
