
The first closure of an academy chain of schools has reignited the debate over where the buck ultimately stops for ensuring children's education is unaffected by a school's management status.
Despite a pledge from Prospects Academies Trust to ensure an "orderly transfer to alternative governance arrangements" for its six schools, Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), remains concerned it could disrupt the education of pupils.
She has written to Education Secretary Michael Gove urging him to implement safeguards to ensure children's education does not suffer when academy chains fail.
Crucially, she wants the government to develop a system that supports the movement of a school back into local authority control until a decision on its long-term future is made.
