Speech and language: Wigan signs up to Early Talk scheme

Wigan Council has become the latest local authority to sign up to a programme designed to help nursery-age children improve their speech and language skills.

The Early Talk initiative, which was launched by communication charity ICan last month, provides speech and language development training andaccreditation for practitioners in early years settings.

Under the scheme, I Can will assess services offered by Wigan Sure Startand train them to work towards an Early Talk quality assurancestandard.

Suzanne Payne, Wigan Sure Start's quality and inclusion manager, said:"It's about impacting on children's speech and language development intheir nursery years. It's also about developing quality provision andskilling-up practitioners in respect of children's speech and languagedevelopment." Early Talk is a three-year, UK-wide programme delivered inconjunction with children's services and is funded by, among others, theHBOS Foundation and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.
