Speech and language: Sandwell project will boost skills

Children in the West Midlands are set to benefit from a 2.75m initiative aimed at improving speech and language skills.

The two-year Time To Talk programme aims to boost the confidence andlanguage skills of all under-fives in Sandwell through workshops,additional support and fun art and craft activities.

It will target more than 2,000 children and is being run by the SandwellChildren and Young People's Trust Partnership. The Government'sNeighbourhood Renewal Fund is bankrolling the programme.

Penny Penn-Howard, director of schools at Sandwell Council, said: "Wewant to make sure children are seen and heard. By helping to improvecommunication skills we hope to make a positive difference in children'slives in all kinds of ways, and especially in preparation for school andlater achievement."
