Special Educational Needs: Plans for a major overhaul of regionalpartnerships' remit

1 min read
The Government is planning to massively expand the remit of the regional partnerships set up five years ago to improve services for children with special educational needs.

The Department for Education and Skills wants the 11 special educationalneeds partnerships to also focus on the needs of children in care and toplay a greater role in safeguarding children.

Ministers have agreed to continue funding the partnerships for anothertwo years on this basis. But the amount of funding will not be increasedto reflect the broadened remit - it will continue at the current levelof 2.125m per year until 2008.

The DfES was still finalising details when Children Now went to press, but a senior source at the department confirmed the changes were goingahead, saying: "The detail is still being worked through but ministershave agreed that, in the future, partnerships will also focus on theneeds of looked-after children and will work with local authoritysafeguarding children boards to ensure children with special educationalneeds and disabilities are appropriately supported."
