Southeast pilots suicide prevention programme

1 min read

Lewes District and Wealden Mind, a mental health charity, is heading the initiative, which was developed by the Canadian organisation LivingWorks. It has received 35,000 a year for two years from the National Institute for Mental Health in England, 9,000 from the Prison Service and 5,000 from parent organisation Mind.

The Southeast will be the first area of England to adopt Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), which has already been introduced in Scotland. ASIST teaches professionals to spot and tackle the early signs of suicidal behaviour.

About 400 professionals, mainly from East Sussex, have already been trained, including Youth Development Service workers, YMCA staff, Connexions personal advisers and campaigners from youth suicideprevention charity Papyrus.
