Social Services: East Riding admits to serious errors

East Riding of Yorkshire council has accepted the findings of the Local Government Ombudsman that its conduct in a case where a woman has been separated from her children constituted serious maladministration.

It has also agreed to pay the complainant 10,000 in compensation after the Ombudsman found it failed to carry out its duties in enabling contact with her children to be re-established.

The woman's children were taken by social services to stay with their fathers when she was admitted to hospital after taking an overdose. The arrangements were made permanent by court orders.

The courts awarded the woman reasonable contact with the children, but no sessions have taken place since her overdose. The council said it had taken "positive action" to ensure such a situation did not happen again.
