Social services: Children's services face 100m deficit

Children's social services will have blown their budget by 100m this financial year, a survey out tomorrow (16 March) is expected to show.

The annual survey from the Association of Directors of Social Servicesand the Local Government Association will confirm that councils acrossEngland face severe budget deficits.

The report hammers home the extent of the huge pressures children'sservices continue to face. The most serious strain on budgets is meetingthe needs of looked-after children.

More than 40 per cent of local authorities said they'd experiencedincreased demand for their fostering services. And 55 per cent had seenincreased demand for residential care, with 62 per cent reporting thatunit costs of residential care from the voluntary and independentsectors had increased.

Demand for agency foster care has increased by 55 per cent.
