Social networking 'aids participation'

1 min read Youth Work
A local government think tank has launched a page on Facebook to encourage councils to interact with young people via social networking sites.

The Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) hopes to get as many local authority employees as possible to join the LGIU/CSN Social Networking Sites Project Group on Facebook after it carried out research showing 65 per cent of council staff thought social networking was "crucial to encouraging youth participation".

But Jasmine Ali, head of the Children's Services Network at the LGIU, said some local authorities did not take social networking sites seriously. "There are councils that don't have policies on social networking sites, while some block their staff from using Facebook," she said. "Social networking is an amazing medium for children's services and if we are to get more people involved in the political process, we need to think about these sites as another avenue."
