Social mobility: Policies are not doing enough

Government policies for disadvantaged children are not succeeding in reversing declining rates of social mobility in Britain, claim researchers.

Although initiatives such as Sure Start and Excellence in Cities were the type of policies needed to reverse the trend, current policy development was "insufficient for the task at hand", said the researchers from the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics.

Their report found that social mobility in Britain was lower than other advanced countries and declining. They also found policies to increase social mobility needed to focus on raising attainment through targeted services and access to good schools.

Sir Peter Lampl, chairman of the Sutton Trust, which sponsored the research, described the findings as "truly shocking".
