SOCIAL EXCLUSION: Local authorities help to maintain truancy fall

The annual pupil absence statistics from the Department for Education and Skills show that 700 young people are being returned to school each day. At the launch of the statistics, junior education minister Ivan Lewis said: "This is equivalent to a secondary school back in education daily." This is attributed to the Government's 450m Behaviour and Attendance Strategy, which continues until May 2006.

The findings coincide with the launch of a two-week poster campaign targeting young people and their parents in Burnley and Preston. Campaign posters in bus shelters will use the slogan "Bunking off, missing out" to target teenagers and parents.
