SOCIAL EXCLUSION: Charity opens up IT access to the poor

A consortium of IT giants, including Microsoft, AOL UK, BAE Systems and Hewlett Packard, has ploughed 560,000 into NCH's new Access to IT scheme.

The aim of the project, set to roll out this month, is to provide IT access to all 100,000 young people within the charity's system. It is part of the Government's strategy to have internet access for all by 2005.

John Carr, associate director of the children and technology unit at NCH, said: "Many young people were missing out on technology through poverty. The only way to address this was to tackle it ourselves and we are delighted to get the help of our sponsors."
