Social Care: Officials debate out of area placements

1 min read Social Care
Government officials and care providers have met to discuss concerns about government plans to keep looked-after children in their own local authority.

The Children's Services Development Group, a coalition of care providers, met officials last week to discuss fears that the forthcoming Children in Care Bill would include restrictions on placing children outside their local area. The group is concerned this would stop children with complex behavioural problems getting specialist support (CYP Now, 5-11 September).

David Savage, chief executive of Castlecare Group, attended the gathering and added that it was a positive meeting with the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

"We found the officials from the department very helpful and very welcoming with a great willingness to discuss and listen," he said. "Our emphasis was the requirement for flexibility and that what was most important was to meet the highly complex needs of children rather than have it written in black and white that they can only do this or that. The officials were sympathetic."
