Social Care News: Young Offenders - Restraint on hold after youth death

The Youth Justice Board has suspended the use of a restraint technique in youth custody institutions in the wake of an investigation into the death of Gareth Myatt at the Rainsbrook secure training centre.

The "seated double embrace" technique will be suspended pending a review of the potential medical implications of the hold.

The board will issue guidance to young offenders' institutions, secure training centres and local authority secure children's homes.

This follows a request from Northamptonshire Police, which is conducting the inquiry into the death of 15-year-old Myatt in April 2004.

Detective chief inspector Charles Moffat, who is leading the probe, said: "The recommendation should not be seen in any way as the conclusion to our inquiry or as an indication of what the outcome of our investigation might be."
