Social Care News: Scotland - Staff issues not to blame for assaults

The Scottish Executive has denied that staff shortages or a lack of training are to blame for an increase in child assaults in care homes.

A survey by a Scottish newspaper, which obtained statistics from more than half of Scotland's councils, found there were more than 400 incidents of children attacking children last year.

And there were 554 assaults on staff compared to 449 in 2000.

A spokesman for the Executive said staffing ratios had increased. "There are sufficient staff in residential accommodation to provide children with a safe and secure environment," he said.

"All residential care staff receive training in defusing difficult situations and all homes should have clear procedures for dealing with such situations."

The statistics were not held centrally so it was not possible to confirm or deny the figures, he added.
