Social Care News: Scotland - Councils fail in bid to scrap B&B rule

The organisation that represents Scotland's local authorities has failed in a last-minute attempt to overturn new rules that will outlaw the accommodation of homeless families with children in bed and breakfasts.

Cosla had objected to the "impossible" timetable for adhering to the regulations, which were announced by the Scottish Executive last month (Children Now, 17-23 November) and came into force this week.

It had asked for a three-month extension so that councils would be able to comply. But the Scottish Parliament's Communities Committee voted against a motion to scrap the new regulations.

The rules mean that no family should spend more than 14 nights in B&B accommodation unless in exceptional circumstances.
