Social Care news: Scotland - B&B ban could be difficult to enforce

Children could continue to be condemned to live in "damaging" bed-and-breakfast housing despite a ban announced by politicians last week, experts fear.

The Scottish Executive would struggle to implement its rule, warned housing charity Scotland Shelter. "While the change is fantastic, implementation will be a problem because of the lack of temporary accommodation," said a spokeswoman.

The Executive said last week that no child should be housed in a B&B except in an emergency.

New rules state that families should have accommodation suitable for children, including exclusive use of their own rooms, access to other rooms, and accessible health and education facilities. Unsuitable accommodation can only be used for 14 days.
