Department for Education and Skills statistics published last week showthat there were 980 children in private foster care in England at 31March 2006. But the British Association for Adoption and Fosteringbelieves the actual number could be as high as 20,000.
The Liberal Democrats said that since there was no compulsoryregistration of private fostering, it was impossible to trace allchildren in such placements.
Annette Brooke MP, the Liberal Democrats' children's spokeswoman, said:"(We are) concerned that the new law will still leave some children indangerous situations."
