Social Care News: Northern Ireland - Unmarried couple's adoptionrejected

A judge in Northern Ireland has rejected a bid to allow unmarried couples to adopt children.

The case was brought by X and Y about X's daughter. Y wanted to adoptX's daughter, but could not because the couple were unmarried.

Under Northern Ireland law unmarried couples are not allowed toadopt.

The couple argued the law is in breach of their human rights in respectof family life and discriminated against them. But the Lord ChiefJustice Brian Kerr said the pair had failed to distinguish cohabitingcouples as a definable group.
