The former home and education secretary David Blunkett MP was speakingat a Fostering Network event last week. He said it was important to domore to stop children coming into care through schemes that supportparents in the home. "Of course we need to get parents into parentingclasses, but one-to-one support, which can be cheaper than takingchildren into care, is something we need to return to," he said.
Blunkett also stated that the education support grant for looked-afterchildren should be reinvented to create extra resources for musiclessons or sports activities.
And he floated the idea of education champions to ensure looked-afterchildren get into the schools they choose.
