Social Care News: Looked-after children - Judge rejects special guardianship

One of the first reported High Court judgments to look at the merits of adoption versus new special guardianship orders has ruled in favour of adoption.

The case involves a "miracle baby" smuggled to England from Kenya bychild traffickers. A woman, known as Mrs E in court, claimed the childwas born after a miraculous 27-day pregnancy. She is a member of GilbertDeya Ministries, the controversial church whose leader Gilbert Deyaclaims to use prayer to help infertile women conceive.

Haringey council placed the baby in care in 2003.

Last week, Mr Justice Ryder agreed with the north London council thatadoption was the best long-term option for the child, who is nowbelieved to be just over two-and-a-half years old. The judge rejected aplea by the baby's foster carer for a special guardianship order,describing it as a "poor second choice".
