Social Care News: Looked-After Children - Better complaints information urged

Looked-after children placed away from their local areas must be made more aware of complaints procedures, the Association of Directors of Social Services has warned.

John Coughlan, co-chair of the association's Children and Families Committee, said children should "not be disadvantaged by being placed out of (their local) authority".

He said they must have information about the local authority they live in and the local authority that placed them.

The warning is a response to a Department for Education and Skills' consultation on changes to the social services complaints procedures for children and young people.

Explicit reference on the need to consult with children when they say they want to make a complaint should also be part of the final guidance, the association said.

The revised guidance is expected in the near future.
