Social Care News: Inspection - Warning for councils over Bill's power

Children's social services at two councils are so bad that the Government would send in hit squads if it already had the tough intervention powers contained in the Children Bill, which is currently making its' way through parliament.

Children's minister Margaret Hodge has warned local authorities that education secretary Charles Clarke would use provisions in the Bill to intervene if he felt their services were failing vulnerable young people.

Appearing at the Commons education select committee, she declined to name the councils.

The Children Bill will give the Government similar powers in relation to children's social services that it currently enjoys with education.

Building on the experience of inspectorates such as Ofsted, which inspects schools, the intention is to suggest and, where possible, agree tailored solutions with local authorities.

Where agreement is not possible the Government will send in hit squads from the public, voluntary or even the private sector, Hodge told MPs
