Social Care News: Foster Care - Major push for minimum payments

Campaigners are to launch a high-profile push to persuade the Government to set a statutory minimum allowance for foster carers.

The Fostering Network has already begun lobbying MPs to support an amendment to the Children Bill, which will reach the Commons in September.

Hundreds of foster carers throughout the country have been writing to their MPs and many of these have already contacted children's minister Margaret Hodge to urge the Government to act.

Campaign manager Vicki Swain said comments made by a minister in the Lords have raised hopes that the campaign could be on the verge of success.

"We have a large level of cross- party support and if we make a large enough noise about the issue we think the Government will feel obliged to make concessions," she said.
