Social Care News: Foster carers - Shortfall prompts minimum pay call

A statutory minimum allowance could be the only way for the Government to turn around the accelerating fall in the number of foster carers, according to the Fostering Network.

Last week, the organisation revealed that 8,200 foster carers were needed across England; 35 per cent higher than the 6,100 shortfall in 2002.

Executive director Robert Tapsfield said the "crippling" shortage could only begin to be tackled fully when the Government "recognised the need for proper investment in fostering services".

The charity is pushing for a minimum allowance to be included in the Children Bill.

English local authorities were asked how many foster carers they would have to recruit to be able to offer children a choice of placement.

This means having a sufficiently wide pool of carers, so each child can live with a family that meets their needs.
