Social Care News: Foster carer - Bookmarks battle Derby's shortage

A shortage of foster carers has led Derby City Council to use its yearly council tax bill to hunt for potential carers.

Under the scheme every household in Derby will be sent a special bookmark including information on fostering and the fostering and adoption hotline number. The council currently has 170 foster carers looking after 390 children.

A spokeswoman said: "We desperately need more carers to look after children of all ages and backgrounds in the short to long term."

This is the second time the council has used this method of recruiting.

Councillor Evonne Berry, cabinet member for social care and youth, said: "Sending out a bookmark to all households is a very effective and cost-efficient way to increase awareness about fostering."
