Social Care News: Foster Care - Interest is raised by fortnight of events

Foster Care Fortnight generated up to 40 per cent more fostering inquiries to local authorities, according to initial feedback.

Surrey County Council had 39 calls during the Fostering Network's two-week campaign, which ended on Sunday, compared with 28 the fortnight before, an increase of 39 per cent.

There were 12 responses to media coverage, compared to none in the previous two weeks.

Halton Social Services in Merseyside estimated enquiries rose 20 to 30 per cent. "It was a good response, but I would not say it was as successful as last year because it came soon after the BBC's Taking Care season," said Jenny Macquire, marketing officer in the council's adoption and fostering team.

The fortnight ended with the British Association for Adoption and Fostering demanding a radical overhaul of the UK foster care system to overcome the 8,000 shortage of carers. It wants a minimum fostering allowance and better training and support.
