Barnardo's has developed training to help Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) staff deal with child victims of domestic violence.

Cafcass appointed the children's charity to help its staff become moreaware of how they should approach such cases. The training programmestarted this month after the decision was made to set it up as part ofCafcass's domestic violence policy, which was introduced in 2005.

The programme is a three-part training course held over two days, whichinvolves theory training, a workshop on domestic violence and familylaw, and help on communicating with children.

Barnardo's main role is to help with the section on communicating withchildren. To do this, the charity has compiled a DVD of young people whohave been victims of domestic violence to explain how they would like itdealt with by practitioners. It also collected the views of young peoplein a school about how they feel safe.
