"Social workers might find themselves out of their depth when dealing with young people claiming to be under 18 but labelled as adult by Home Office officials," said Nushra Mapstone of the British Association of Social Workers. "It can be difficult for them to challenge this decision." The Refugee Council was also concerned that age-disputed young people under 18 were being let down by the system.
The Home Office was unable to confirm the extent of the problem because it does not collect statistics on age-disputed minors.
