Social Care News: Asylum seekers - Proposals could cut appealtimes

Failed unaccompanied asylum seekers will have less time to appeal if more countries are added to a Government list of places where asylum claims are deemed likely to be false.

Under proposals put to Parliament by the Home Office, 10 more countries, including Sierra Leone, would be added to the non-suspensive appeallist. Failed claimants on the list must return to their home countrybefore they can appeal against refused claims.

Lisa Nandy, chair of the Refugee Children's Consortium, said there weresafety concerns about sending unaccompanied children back if theirapplications fail. She said: "For unaccompanied children it meansreduced appeal rights. That's a real worry because they are morevulnerable."

Figures released by the Home Office last Tuesday (22 May) showed thenumber of unaccompanied children making asylum applications haddecreased in the first quarter of the year from 730 to 710.
