Social Care News: Adoption - Campaigners call for parental rights

The Government should give people who adopt the same rights as birth parents, say campaigners.

There is currently no parity between maternity and adoption pay and adoption leave is not available to foster carers who go on to adopt a child they care for.

Changing this would recognise the commitment adopters make to very vulnerable children, says BAAF Adoption & Fostering in its response to a Department of Trade and Industry consultation on changes to maternity and adoption leave and pay.

BAAF says the number of people who would take adoption leave is so small that the cost of recognising their contribution would be "very low". It adds: "It would be unthinkable for a child to be placed with prospective adopters who continue to work full-time without interruption."
