Charities campaign for more open-minded adoption

1 min read Social Care
Potential adopters are being asked to keep an open mind when looking for children to adopt, in campaigns from two organisations to mark National Adoption Week.

The British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) is calling for prospective adopters to consider older children and those with special needs, after research it commissioned found 43 per cent of people would prefer to adopt a baby and 34 per cent would not consider a child whose mother had misused drugs or alcohol during the pregnancy.

David Holmes, BAAF chief executive, said: "We are asking the pubic to keep an open mind and see the individual child. The reality is that although there are babies and very young children who need adopting, many will face considerable challenges."

Meanwhile, charity Action for Children is calling for people to consider adopting siblings. Susan Cotton, adoption manager at Action for Children, said: "With such a high number of children entering care at present, the need for adopters is at an all-time high."
