Social care may suffer in practices

Having social workers operating from independent social work practices will make working together with other professionals more difficult, a leading expert has warned.

Speaking at the National Children and Adult Services conference in Bournemouth last week, Dave Hill, director of children, schools and families at the London Borough of Merton, said social work practices were a bad idea.

He said that in councils a number of professionals work together to look after one child but "taking that (social work) out of the authority makes it twice as difficult".

Hill added there were questions about whether or not councils will be able to offer a tailored service to children: "I think Care Matters will raise a number of significant issues around corporate parenting and if it is able to offer personalisation for kids in care."
