Social Care: Death panels need multi-agency links

An initial report into the establishment of child death overview panels has found they need to have a multi-agency approach.

Researchers at the University of Warwick have been evaluating the introduction of child death review processes and the establishment of the panels. The researchers have been studying nine pilot schemes in Birmingham, Bristol, East Sussex, Halton, Harrow, Oxford, Salford, Southwark and Wakefield.

Peter Sidebotham, senior lecturer in child health at the university and the principal investigator on the research team, said they have made a number of key findings on what makes the pilots successful. He said they have recognised that the process needs to involve several agencies. "Where they have got a core group of people from a range of agencies driving it forward that seems to be what helps it to run successfully," he said.
