Child death panels considered worthwhile

A study into pilot child death overview panels (CDOP) has found there is widespread enthusiasm for the process.

A report published by the University of Warwick for the Department for Children, Schools and Families found teams in the nine pilot sites were keen to develop the boards, which they saw as worthwhile.

The panels are set up to review any death of a child between the age of 0 and 18.

All of the sites studied for the report Preventing Childhood Deaths, A Study of Early Starter Child Death Overview Panels decided to have a small core membership of professionals, with a wider selection of co-opted members to bring expertise to the panel when they were needed.

But it was found there was a need to clarify the relationship between the CDOP and any other reviewing processes taking place, such as criminal investigations and hospital reviews.
