Social Care: Children in care - Cash boost helps local authorities

The Government has given the South West a 75,000 boost to help councils commission services for children in care.

The South West Centre of Excellence co-ordinated the bid for theregion's directors of children's services. The area is one of five,including London and the North East, to benefit. The money will be addedto 300,000 from the centre to fund projects for children incare.

These include supporting commissioning, matching looked-after childrenwith placements through services such as a region-wide database,promoting joint working and working on placement processes andstability. The South West project will also look at special educationalneeds placements in residential schools.

John Lees, children's services programme manager at the South WestCentre of Excellence, said: "We have added the bid money to the moneyfrom the centre to give focus on the aspects of regional commissioningthe Department for Education and Skills is keen to promote."
