At this month's meeting of the Education and Training Standards Committee of The National Youth Agency (NYA), we will consider a proposal that youth work becomes a graduate profession from September 2010.
This means The NYA would no longer grant professional recognition to Dip HE or foundation degrees. All those who already possess or will gain Dip HE/foundation degrees on NYA-validated programmes in youth work up to August 2010 will retain JNC status.
This reflects The NYA's recognition of the increasingly challenging roles that newly qualified youth workers are undertaking; the difficulty of covering sufficient ground in a two-year undergraduate programme; the view of higher education institutions that some learning outcomes, such as management, are appropriate to level three or honours degree level; and the reality that a large proportion of youth work students already go on to complete an honours after obtaining their JNC Dip HE/foundation degree.
