What is the National Living Wage and why is it significant for the childcare sector?

As of next month, all employers including nurseries, will be legally obliged to pay employees aged 25 and over the National Living Wage (NLW) of at least £7.20 per hour. The national minimum wage still applies to employees below 25, and ranges from £3.30 to £6.70 per hour, depending on their age.

It’s particularly significant for the childcare sector because large numbers of people who work in nurseries – 62 per cent according to the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) Living Wage survey – are currently paid less than the NLW.
