Exposure to nicotine at a young age increases the risk of addiction, making the teenage years a key time to discuss smoking.

How common is smoking among children?

Smoking among young people in the UK is less common than it was. The majority of young people choose not to smoke but it is still a big issue. Around 25 per cent of young people aged between 11 and 15 admit to having tried smoking but the number goes up when you get to 15 and above, with around 15 per cent of 15- to 18-year-olds saying that they are regular smokers. Around 500 young people each day try a cigarette for the first time, but the vast majority do not become regular smokers.
