What does racism among children and young people look like?

Racism can take all forms among children as it does in adults, including name calling, bullying, violence, exclusion and stereotypes. Children are not racist, but their behaviours can be racist.

How prevalent is racist behaviour?

Nearly 88,000 racist school incidents were recorded between 2007 and 2011, but there is no longer a legal duty for schools to record racist incidents. One of the common criticisms about reporting racism in schools is that "children are branded racists". If someone in the public eye is alleged to have used a racist term they may say "I'm not a racist" or their friends may say "I know them and they're not a racist".
