What benefits are young people in full-time education entitled to?
If a young person is in education or training, then a parent or carer can claim child benefit up to the 20th birthday of the young person and in some circumstances an award of child tax and or working tax credit can be made - this is dependent upon household income. Those claiming benefits in respect of a young person should check their entitlement to housing and council tax benefit too. Education maintenance allowance is not taken into account when calculating entitlement.
Although this academic year sees the end of the education maintenance allowance (EMA), young people in receipt of it prior to January 2011 will receive the funds applicable until the end of the 2011/12 academic year.
