Ralph Jagger is head of Ackton Pastures Primary School in Castleford,West Yorkshire, an area with one of the highest levels of teenagepregnancy in the country. Keen to help tackle the problem he recentlyjoined a group of primary school head teachers from England who visitedthe Netherlands to find out whether the Dutch approach could be used intheir classrooms.
With the highest use of contraception among young people worldwide, theDutch method of teaching sex and relationships education (SRE) hasattracted international attention.
Holland has a rate of teenage pregnancy around four times lower thanBritain, less of a problem with sexually transmitted infections (STIs)and a higher average age for first-time sex. SRE starts in primaryschool and by secondary age pupils talk openly about sexuality withtheir teachers.
