Serious Case Reviews: Revised Chapter Eight of Working Together to Safeguard Children.

The government is revising chapter eight of Working Together to Safeguard Children. This is in response to Lord Laming's progress report on child protection in England, published in March.

The revisions to chapter eight are aimed at local safeguarding children boards, which by law undertake a serious case review whenever a child dies or is seriously injured and abuse or neglect is known or suspected to be a factor.

Changes proposed to the guidance include clearly setting out that the prime purpose of a serious case review is to learn lessons both at an individual and inter-agency level. The revised guidance also emphasises the importance of undertaking reviews in a way that promotes learning. And it extends the timescale for completing most reviews from four to six months to take account of other legal processes.
