An interim report from the National Inquiry into Self-Harm said more children and young people were suffering from self-harm.
Barry Nixon, a professional seconded to the National CAMHS Support Service, said A&E departments were often not geared up to deal with children with mental problems.
The report cited figures from ChildLine that said calls to counsellors from children worried about self-harm increased by 30 per cent in the year to March 2004.
But a large number of young people reported negative experiences when they tried to engage with services for support, singling out hospitals as a particular area of concern.
