Child poverty campaign groups are currently pushing for the introductionof a members' bill in the Scottish Parliament that would entitle allprimary school children to free meals.
The proposal is currently out for consultation - the first stage for amembers' bill in Scotland. If successful it will be tabled as a bill inOctober.
But a Scottish Labour Party spokesman said the party was not in favourof the bill. "We think it would be better to spend this money onchildren in financial difficulty rather than children whose parents arewell-off," he said.
The Child Poverty Action Group in Scotland is among the groupssupporting the bill.
