Tulip Siddiq, shadow children and early years minister, has written to every backbench Conservative MP, asking them to support a proposal by footballer Marcus Rashford and backed by Labour, which would provide additional support to over 1.4 million children in every school holiday until Easter.

A parliamentary petition set up by the Manchester United and England forward has amassed almost 300,000 signatures since it was launched on Wednesday last week.

Siddiq’s letter comes a day before MPs are set to vote on the extension of free school meals on Wednesday.

She wrote that the proposal would “provide additional support to families on low incomes and help to ensure that all parents can put food on the table for their children, whatever their circumstances. This policy would support the many families in your constituency who are struggling to make ends meet.”
