Schools struggle on exclusion rules

Education
Children are missing out on mental health care because government rules on exclusions do not give schools enough time to prepare support.

Government rules introduced last year made schools responsible for pupils after their sixth day of exclusion. But an Association of School and College Leaders poll found schools struggled to prepare support before they became responsible. This was a big problem if referral to mental health services was needed.

A Department for Children, Schools and Families spokesman said: "We are aware schools can have difficulty accessing services to tackle issues that pupils have." He urged teachers to tell the department what was needed to get pupils the support they need.
